Flash Gordon moves to film

Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless have been hired to write the script for the new film version of sci-fi hero classic Flash Gordon at Sony Pictures.

The story of a young man who is kidnapped and taken to the distant planet Mongo, where he and companions Dale Arden and Hans Zarkov embark on a series of adventures fighting a ruler named Ming the Merciless. Flash Gordon has existed in various media since its 1934 comic strip inception by Alex Raymond, including a Sci-Fi Channel series last year.

Breck Eisner
is attached to direct and Neal Moritz will produce. The project was previously set up at Universal, but Sony recently aquired the rights from Hearst's King Features Syndicate.
