Eureka I found it!

Last summer a quirky little TV series shot in the Nanaimo region. Eureka shot its pilot in Ladysmith and a bit in the Comox Valley. The 11 episode opening season of Eureka will premiere this summer and follows a US marshal who gets stranded in the small town of Eureka, a community he discovers is actually a top-secret “brain trust” where the government has various scientists working on potentially world-altering experiments. While exterior were shot on the island interior were filmed at Vancouver Film Studios, as will be the case with the series.

I found a promotional trailer that you can watch.

Call for Letters for Commission

victoria film commissionThe Greater Victoria Film Commission is putting a call out for letters of support to your local Mayor, MLA and MP's. This is in an effort to gain support that will keep the commission in tack.

It was recently revealed that the lease is soon up on the commission’s current Government St. offices and that the film office is without a commissioner. Local businesses and various levels of Government provide funding; hence the call for letters of support.

Last year the film industry brought over $28 Million in productions to the area, a huge boost to the local economy and local workers.

If you need other numbers than those listed below, please contact Lynne Anderson,

Ultraviolet is Running Scared

Cameron BrightWell, I wondered how long it would take? (see my January prediction in Attractions) Two large movies both staring the same 13 year-old kid both set to hit theatres on the same day, one of them had to give. Nanaimo's Cameron Bright started shoting Ultraviolet two years ago and Running Sacared right after that, now the two films were set for release on February 24th, but one company moved their film out of the battle.

Ultraviolet moved to March 31st, a full five weeks later. Problem is, this put the film up against Ice Age 2, Basic Instinct 2 and Vancouver made Slither where it was sure to be buried at the box-office. So anouther move, this time to March 3rd were fewer big films are there to fight it off. Only the Bruce Willis thriller 16 Blocks and some teen girl comedy called Aquamarine.

Right now HSX is putting Running Scared at H$17.35 and Ultraviolet at H$35.18 with a recent +2.25 move. Cameron's H$10.87 could move higher if these films make their box-office targets.

New Studio deal for Vancouver

Lionsgate Studios, formerly North Shore Studios, has been sold to Bosa Development Corp., builders of Mammoth Studios in Burnaby. Bosa owns shopping centres, warehouses and office buildings, and are know as excellent condominium developers, like Cameron Island in Nanaimo.

Peter Leitch, who currently heads Lionsgate Studios and is the Chair of the British Columbia Motion Picture Production Industry Association, will manage all of Bosa's studio operations. "I am very excited to be joining the Bosa organization," said Leitch. "By combining Lionsgate and Mammoth Studios, we will be able to cater to the entire spectrum of film and television production."

Together, Lionsgate Studios and Mammoth Studios contain more than 500,000 square feet of sound stages and production support space, creating the largest studio facilities in Canada, and will foster more than 1,500 jobs in B.C.

Bosa Development, is significantly increasing its commitment to the British Columbia film industry with the acquisition of Lionsgate Studios. "We are very committed to the film industry in British Columbia," said President of Bosa Development Corporation, Nat Bosa. "This is an industry that employs 35,000 people and injects $1 billion annually into the Provincial economy. We have a highly skilled workforce and a government that supports the industry. We are looking forward to helping the industry thrive and expand in the future."

The acquisition coincides with the provincial government's decision to extend film and TV tax credits and an imminent labour deal between the industry's technicians and producers.

The sale for $41.6M becomes effective March 15th, 2006.

Return to the Dark Crystal

Jim Henson created some of my favored memories as a child and now the Jim Henson Company is making plans to sequelize one of their best muppet freatures. Dark Crystal 2 or Power of the Dark Crystal will be directed by Genndy Tartakovsky, known for Dexter's Laboratory and Star Wars: Clone Wars.

Brian Froud is back to create new characters for a script that has already been writen by Annette Duffy and David Odell. David Odell was a regular writer on The Muppet Show and wrote the screenplay for the original Dark Crystal, as well as Supergirl: The Movie.

The film is set hundres of years after the adventures of Jen and Kira when a mysterious girl made of fire steals a shard of the great crystal, in hopes of reignighting the dying sun. As I remember there were more than one. Less sets will be used this time as the muppets will perform with CGI backdrops created by Tartakovsky's Orphanage Animation Studios. Shooting is set to start this summer.

I hope that Aughra is still around, she was one of my favorite characters fromt he old film.
